Ultrasounds Abound in Social Networking World

4D ultrasound on MySpace.(July 25, 2008) Addison Friedman is a proud 31-year-old mom-to-be whose family and friends have joined the growing practice of showing their preborn babies to the world via social networking.

Her 28-week old child can be seen in a vivid, moving 4D ultrasound on the popular social networking site MySpace.com. Next to the video is a picture of the smiling mother with big belly protruding while she stands on her back porch with a palm tree in the background.

SeattlePI.com, which related the trend of posting such pictures recently, said that MySpace, FaceBook and blogs are awash with ultrasounds — from those that are grainy and hard to see, to stunning 3D and 4D images.

"When you're pregnant, everyone's excited and wants to see pictures," the article said, quoting 29-year-old Melissa Hemrich, from Marysville, WA. "Everyone's going to ask you to send it anyway."

Ultrasounds, a routine part of pregnancy care for those planning to deliver, are also highly suggested for women thinking about getting an abortion. An ultrasound provides needed information, such as the age of the fetus, which is helpful because there are different procedures depending upon the number of weeks of pregnancy, says WomanCare of Berwyn, IL. The procedure can be done in the center's office and is free.

In addition, those wanting to use RU486 to terminate their pregnancies should have an ultrasound to ensure that they are not farther along than seven weeks, since RU486 taken after that time can cause serious medical problems, the pregnancy center reports. Learn about the center's free ultrasounds.

Women in these communities can contact WomanCare Services about abortion information, free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and counseling: Berwyn, Cicero, Lyons, Forest Park, La Grange, Stickney, IL, and other areas.
