(July
23, 2008) A certain “soft message” concerning
abortion may have taken hold
in society, says a Time magazine
commentator, referring to a
group of teenagers in Gloucester,
MA who formed a pact to get
pregnant and help each other
raise their children.
The news from Gloucester, which gained widespread media attention from Australia to Brazil, came in the light of a report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of a 19 percent drop in pregnancies of girls ages 15 to 19 from 1991 to 1997. The abortion rate for girls ages 15 to 17 fell 55% as well since the late 1980s.
“I wonder if some soft message has taken hold, with the data suggesting that more and more women facing hard choices are deciding to carry the child to term,” writes Nancy Gibbs in the June 25 issue.
She says, “Kids aren't necessarily having more sex or more girls aren't getting pregnant, but more of those who do are deciding to keep the baby rather than abort it.” Gibbs alludes to the influence of the 4,000 crisis pregnancy centers, hotlines and support groups across the country.
The news is relevant to young women in Berwyn, Cicero, Maywood, Melrose and North Riverside, IL who are seeking abortion information, free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and counseling services.
