“Liberation” From Pregnancy Following Abortion Leads to Unexpected Results

(July 7, 2008) An initial feeling of liberation is often felt by women who get abortions, but that feeling often gives way to guilt and anxiety, said a Canadian editorial writer in Canada's largest newspaper.

The column was expected to be of interest to young women in Berwyn, Cicero, Maywood and surrounding Illinois communities seeking free pregnancy tests or abortions.

Although women may feel relieved after an abortion, that feeling “was almost always accompanied by deep guilt, trauma, anguish, nightmares for months” and other problems, said Fr. Thomas Rosica, who was head of the Newman Centre at the University of Toronto for six years and who is a columnist for the Sun Media.

“The poor and erroneous advice given to young, pregnant women at university-sponsored sex education centres directed them to clinics for ‘therapeutic abortions' for unplanned pregnancies,” he said.

The editorial followed the controversy over the July 1 awarding of the Order of Canada medal to Canadian abortionist Henry Morgentaler by Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean.

Morgentaler, who boasts of performing 100,000 abortions, had pushed for the legalization of abortion in Canada since the 1960's. Abortion has been legal in Canada since 1988. Amid a storm of protest over the award, two Order of Canada medals have been returned in the first week after the granting of the award.
