Cicero, IL Women Caught in Recession May Choose Abortion

Women caught by the recession may be choosing abortion.(Mar. 25, 2009) With a closer watch on their pocketbooks during the recession, women in near west Cook County, including Cicero, Berwyn, and Oak Park, IL may be resorting to contraception and abortion in growing numbers, if national trends show themselves in the Chicago suburbs.

About 325 women in Cicero and 180 in Berwyn obtained abortions in 2005, and 200 women in Oak Park got abortions in 2006, based on the cities' population in relation to the number of Illinois abortions.

Condom sales rose 5% during the last quarter of 2008 throughout the country, and 6% in January according to USA Today, as reported in RH Reality Check. Although abortion rates throughout the U.S. have been dropping since 1990, fears of having another mouth to feed, especially among those without health insurance, may lead to more abortions.

USA Today announced in a recent headline, "Recession Seems to Put People in the Mood for Condoms," and commented that "nesting" increases during difficult economic times as couples try to avoid the costs of a growing family. The public radio station NPR reports that abortion clinics have seen an increase in those seeking their services, many of them women older than the common 18 to 24 year-old age group.

Planned Parenthood of Illinois reported recently that abortions in that state had reached an all-time high in January, according to ABC News. Planned Parenthood CEO Steve Trombley told ABC News that many of them are "motivated by the women's economic worries."

The article said that the National Abortion Federation reports that many women are postponing a decision to get an abortion while they collect money to pay for them, thus raising the risk associated with later-term abortions.

Women in Oak Park, Cicero, Berwyn, North Riverside, Forest Park and other Illinois suburbs can learn more about their options concerning an abortion decision by calling WomanCare Services in Berwyn at 708-795-6000.
