(Dec. 15, 2008) If you’re feeling queasy and think you may have missed your last period, you might just be pregnant. One of the best ways to find out is to simply take a free pregnancy test, says a counseling center in Berwyn, Illinois.
WomanCare Services, which counsels women with unplanned pregnancies, some of whom are considering abortion, says that a missed period is one of the best signs of pregnancy. This is why women are asked for the first day of their last normal period. (Although a period could be delayed because of stress.)
If a woman thinks is pregnant, the earliest day she should take the test is two or three days after her missed period. She can call WomanCare to come in for a free pregnancy test.
The pregnancy test at the center measures the levels of hCG (hormone secreted during pregnancy) in the urine. The test offered at WomanCare is of a good quality, will measure 25-50 mIUs of hCG, which is usually the amount found in urine between the fourth and fifth week of pregnancy.
The first morning’s urine will always contain the highest concentration of hCG. However, the center does not require that one use the first morning urine. A woman can help better her chances of having enough hCG in her urine by waiting four hours after the last urination to take the test. This will allow hCG to build up in the urine. The tests rarely give false results.
Symptoms of pregnancy, besides a missed period, include nausea, breast tenderness, sleepiness, frequent urination, moodiness, an increase in cervical discharge, weird food cravings, and bloating.
